Sometimes I should really just say no

So I was asked by my girlfriend to film stuff tonight for her. Its a fitness studio's showcase, and she's been really into it, so more power to her, if she's happy. Thats what counts.

The problem comes in that 1) its at a bar, and I hate bars. I dont drink, there's zero redeeming factors about it to me personallt, and 2) it is so horribly organized, its like a middle school play. Im a stickler for organization, so this bugs the shit out of me.

There are "a bunch of acts," and they only really got the setlist when arriving. In a world of texting an emails, I dont get how thats acceptable. They barely know when it starts, and no one knows when it ends. I habe to rely on other people giving me rides home, so the general air of uncertainty is just a complete failure. I know for a fact different groups have not seen all the other acts, so theyre effectively dependent on drunk people oogling at girls in spandex for a successful show. Anothing thing that I just dont really like.

No one really knows whether Im only filming what my girlfriend is doing or if Im doing the whole thing. Lets just say Im prepared for the worst, and can do either, but Im not exactly offering, theyre going to need to ask. My gear is expensive and custom, so I dont lug the video bag out for shits and giggles, much less two dSLRs, a massive tripod and a full follow focus rig.

Ugh. The "hold it however you want," and "do this or this, whatever you want," is not how the finale should be organized less than 2 hours to showtime.

One of the first things I learned as a photog was how to say "no" to friends and family asking me to shoot things, especially for free. It's just not worth it. Saying yes to one event suddenly means saying yes to every wedding, family reunion, Sweet 16, engagement photo shoot, holiday gathering, etc. And the attitude is always "well, anyone can take photos/shoot video!" when it comes to compensation, but "I want professional quality" when it comes to the results. Good luck with tonight...

For this, its actually so crowded the shows somewhere around 1/3 to 1/2 finished, im still sitting in the back on my phone, im only doing this for my girlfriend. No one said boo to me otherwise, and im not concerned about it. The final product will take until close to christmas for me to reach a rough cut though. Im planning out how to make it both a simple video for her, but a teaser for the studio. If they like it, they can purchase it from me, otherwise, just good professional practice for the portfolio.

Just zoom in close and get a whole bunch of pervy shots of different chicks and then she won't ask you to do it again ;)

When I went out and saw the stuff, I was disappoint.

Lighting was horribly low, even for F1.4, the sound was the worst thing Ive ever heard (Im also a live sound tech, so I was extra pissed about that being messed up), and the room was way too small for the showcase. Oh well. Live and learn. We'll see how bad it came out tomorrow, and decide from there whether Ill even touch it. She already knows my lack of faith, so its no big deal.

With the organization of the show, it went about how I expected. It was a controlled disaster, where the level of control was super marginal, nearly non-existant. Next time, I probably wont go.

Yeah no....not going to happen. To be brutally honest, it was a 60/40 split for attractive and "not so much" for this. Im allowed to be that honest, I had to go.
